Hiking in Luxembourg on the GR5 - Today from Eppeldorf to Echternach
Let's go on a new tour on the GR5 in Luxembourg. Today is THE highlight on the entire route of the Luxembourg GR5, namely the Mullerthal with its rocky paths.
Via small paths to Beaufort Castle
We start today at the small church in Eppeldorf and begin with varied trails over the heights with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. After a few kilometres, however, we already enter the Mullerthal Trail with the red M marking, which runs parallel to the blue-yellow marked GR5 here. The first small rocks already give us a foretaste of what awaits us today. We reach Beaufort Castle via small paths and wooden footbridges. The castle, built in the 12th century, stands imposingly on the green meadows and radiates a certain charm with its open, large windows. The complex consists of the old, dilapidated castle in the foreground and a later newly built castle in the background of the castle. It can be visited and open-air concerts are held here from time to time.
The rocky paths in the Mullerthal
We follow small streams again and again and marvel at the beautiful rock formations. A highlight on this tour are the rocks near Berdorf, including the "Sept Gorges" or also called "Siebenschluff". Narrow and metre-high crevices that are barely shoulder-width invite you to discover them. On fine days, like today, the entire rock chain is besieged by climbers.
On the further course, we pass the large cave "Hohllay", open on many sides, with the amphitheatre "Breechkaul" in the immediate vicinity. We now accompany and cross small streams again and again until we reach the Wolf Gorge shortly before our destination. With rock faces rising up to 50 m on three sides, it is perhaps the most spectacular natural monument in Little Luxembourgish Switzerland. The structure and stratification of the Luxembourg sandstone can be seen very clearly on the rock faces. According to research, the formations were formed when blocks of Luxembourg sandstone separated from the sandstone plateau along fissures parallel to the valley. The clayey marl layer beneath the sandstone dammed the penetrating water and caused the sandstone blocks to slide down into the valley, tilting as they did so. At the entrance to the gorge rises the so-called "Cleopatra's Needle", a high obelisk-like rock needle.
Destination of the stage: Echternach
No sooner have we left the gorge than we are already heading downhill towards Echternach. We enjoy the beautiful view for a short while and reach the abbey town. Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg and is famous for the Basilica of Saint Willibrordus and the Abbey Museum.
What is the GR5?
The GR5, a European long-distance hiking trail! The GR5 starts in the Netherlands at Hoek van Holland, crosses Belgium, Luxembourg, France via the Vosges, the Jura, the Maritime Alps and ends after 2080 kilometres at the Mediterranean Sea near Nice. And what does that have to do with us? People like to set goals in their lives - and why not be able to say at some point that you have walked from the North Sea to the Mediterranean in hiking boots? So now we have a new project! As time will allow, we will take on the GR5 and hike it in sections. Sometimes only as weekend tours over stretches that are close to us, or as longer tours when holidays and Corona rules allow. Let's go, bonjour GR5! Or Moieeen, as the Luxembourgers like to greet each other at any time of the day or night!
