We continue our long tour through Europe in the second week. Sunny weather for the second day in a row, which meant putting on our hiking boots again and taking the dogs into the mountains on our own today. The low pressure system over the Atlantic had been giving us unsettled weather for the last few days and a stormy wind was blowing down from the mountains today too. The weather forecast predicted that the wind would die down, so I was optimistic.

Ascent to the Castell de l'Airosa
Start at an altitude of around 350 metres, highest point after around five kilometres at an altitude of almost 1000 metres. So I was in for a strenuous climb. Unfortunately, I was too optimistic about the wind. Gusts of gale-force wind awaited me at this altitude, so I had difficulty keeping my feet. Fortunately, apart from one section, there were no tricky passages on the mountain, otherwise I would have had to abort.

Once you reach the highest point of the hike, you are faced with the rock formations of the Castell de l'Airosa. Simply marvellous. Now you go through a small passage over the saddle of the mountain and on the other side you see a fascinating landscape of many rock pillars that have been created by erosion over the years. The scenery is somewhat reminiscent of a fairytale world.

The Forat de la Vella stone arch
The route now descends steeply to the Forat de la Vella, a stone arch, or perhaps simply a hole or passage in the rock. There was finally no wind here, so after almost nine kilometres we were finally able to take our first break and enjoy the beautiful landscape.
