You want to take your dog, or dogs, to Morocco travelling? We inform you here about the current entry regulations, give you tips on your dog's first-aid kit and share our Travelling experiences from the years 2023 and 2024.

Morocco is a marvellous country. The landscape, the people, the food. What could be better than travelling the country in your own camper van with your beloved companion? But there are a few important things to bear in mind, which we have summarised for you in this article.

What documents do you need for your dog?

  1. An EU pet passport
  2. A valid rabies vaccination
  3. A rabies titre determination
  4. A health certificate

Re 1: The EU pet passport. The dog's microchip number or tattoo number must be entered here.

Re 2: A valid rabies vaccination. Incidentally, the rabies vaccination is only valid for one year in Spain, but three years in Germany. That's why we prefer to have our dogs vaccinated in Germany.

Re 3: The rabies titre determination. It determines the level of antibodies against rabies in your dog's blood and must be carried out by a listed laboratory in the EU. It is possible at the earliest thirty days after the first rabies vaccination. If you have the test carried out by a vet in Spain shortly before travelling to Morocco, it may take two to three weeks before you receive the result. The titre test is not required for departure to Morocco, but is important for re-entry into the EU. It is valid for the dog's entire life as long as you keep to the vaccination intervals. Just one day over and you will need a new titre test.

Re 4: The health certificate must be created no more than 24 hours before the ferry departs. You must bring the following documents to the appointment at Veterinarian bring along: Passport, pet passport and vehicle registration document. Once you have the health certificate from the vet, you must take it and your pet's passport to the harbour in Algeciras, to the Puesto de Inspection Fronterzio (address: Docks PIF Algeciras, Muelle Juan Carlos I. s/n.11201 Algeciras). All the important papers for entering and leaving the country will now be issued there. Hopefully you are now safe and can take the next ferry to Morocco. And as I said, remember to cross within 24 hours.

Where can I get the health certificate for my trip to Morocco?

At almost every vet, or for example at:

Veterinary Clinic Europe, www.verterinario-tarifa.com, Price: approx. 150 €, Languages: Spanish, English, German, Location: Tarifa (Spain)
Centro Veterinario Brulina, www.cvbrulina.com, Price: 30 €, Languages: Spanish only, Location: Algeciras (Spain)

One more note on the Prices for the health certificate. In 2023, we rather blindly took the route to the vet with the best ratings. Here we paid €150 per dog. This year, we took the trouble to do a little research into prices. We have now found a vet who charges €30 for preparing the documents. For our four dogs, for example, that makes a Savings of a whopping €480 and significantly boosts your travel budget.

What medication does my dog need in Morocco?

If your dog falls ill in Morocco, you certainly don't want to have to go looking for a vet in an unfamiliar country. So here are a few tips for a small First-aid kit. You can have these put together by a vet you trust in Germany.

Our Safe-To-Go checklist:

- Parasite protection. It is important that it helps against sand flies, e.g. Spot-on Advantix
- Deworming tablets
- Painkillers
- Antibiotics
- Disinfectant for wounds
- Eye drops
- Dressing material
- Elm bark powder (for stomach problems)
- Something against diarrhoea
- Tick tweezers (there are many ticks in Morocco)

Travelling to Morocco with your dog. What else is important?

Travelling with your dog in Morocco is easy, but there are a few things to know. Travelling in Morocco is not possible without Street dogs. They are everywhere and no matter where we have been so far, they have always wanted to be near us. All the dogs we have met so far have been incredible friendly, respectful and well socialised. If you have well-socialised dogs yourself, there won't be any problems. If we stayed in one place for longer, our dogs stayed on a lead for the first two days and were then allowed to run with the pack of street dogs off the lead. The street dogs accompanied us as a matter of course and it was a great experience to watch them.

It's the heartbreaking moments when we realise that we can't save the street dogs that cause us problems. There are moments that break your heart. On our last visit in 2023, we nursed up a puppy at Desert Point near Taghazout, which other campers told us was the last survivor from the litter and would not make it because it was no longer eating. The little dog looked like a small skeleton with fur. She was also very insecure and hardly dared to approach people. We wormed her and gave her wet food to start with. She quickly regained her appetite and so we decided to rescue her and take her with us on our journey.

Of course, you don't have to rescue a dog immediately, because everyone travelling in Morocco can help a little. Pack yourself a Bag of feed more or buy it in Morocco. Many people also forget: the dogs need Water! So always put a bowl of water in front of your camper. It doesn't cost anything, but it helps immensely. And of course it's also a great thing to donate something to the local animal welfare organisations, be it money or donations in kind.

Moroccans and the dogs

Tend to avoid Muslims religious Dogs and are often afraid of them. Show therefore Respectwhen you are travelling with your own four-legged friend. In some places, people come together for a picnic or shepherds are out and about with their flocks. In such Situations you should of course keep your dog on a lead. Even at the Security It is often advisable to keep your dog on a lead, as many Moroccans simply leave food scraps lying around, for example chicken bones (very dangerous) and certain vegetables that are not compatible with your dog. You will also find a lot of broken glass lying around in Morocco, and there are poisonous scorpions and snakes. Dogs are also poisoned by the authorities in many places, which is why you should keep your dog on a lead there! But enough about that, we want to show you the Morocco trip not spoil it.

Taking dog food with you to Morocco?

Dog food you get in the big Supermarketssuch as Marjane (4-5 kilos cost around 10-14 euros). If your dog Special feed it's difficult in Morocco because you can usually only buy "normal" food. We actually found grain-free food once, but that was it. Veterinary practices are the better address for speciality food, or you can simply take enough from home.

Oh my God, I can't sleep, the dogs are barking!

We read again and again that Travellers about the nocturnal Dog barking complain. Well, that's just part of Morocco, just like crowing roosters, noisy donkeys and mooing cows. Anyone who has problems with such noises should bring earplugs or consider whether this is the right country for them. What's more, you don't realise why the dogs are barking, for example. They are simply guarding their territory and therefore also the pitch you are standing on. So thanks to the Street dogs!

Rescuing a dog from Morocco

What should you do if you find a street dog or a dog from a Organisation want to save. If you come across an injured animal, a puppy or an animal that cannot live on its own, or find a dog that will not leave your side, it is of course difficult to leave it behind. If you decide to take a dog with you, you can contact the local animal welfare organisations. They have many dogs for Mediate and give you advice if you have found a dog that needs to be rescued. Please bear in mind that it is not easy to take a found animal with you. The EU is very strict about this. The same rules apply here as for your own animal. Rabies titer test, at the earliest thirty days after the first vaccination and dogs under six months of age are not allowed to leave the country at all. Of course, we advise against simply smuggling a dog across the border, because if you are caught, the dog will stay in Morocco and its fate will be more than uncertain.
